BPS Newsletter 2025 Term 1 Week 11
Principal's Report
What a great term of learning at Brooky...
What a huge term of leaning and fun at Brookvale. We certainly finished with a bang this week! From a working bee to a wonderful band performance, our Easter Hat parade and success at the DanceSports Gala... not to mention a Fabulous Night of the Notables in 5K, Week 11 had it all.
I have been so proud of the success of our students, staff and community this term. I feel very privileged to be the principal of this fine school. Thank you all for your support for your children and the school.
Term 2 promises to be another great term with lots of exciting things to look forward to. Before that happens I wanted to wish our dedicated and very hardworking teachers, SLSOs and office staff a well-earned break and thank them for all their efforts.
Teachers return to school for two staff development days at the beginning of next term. We welcome students back on Wednesday 30th April.
Have a very happy Easter and safe and relaxing holiday. I hope the Easter Bunny is kind.
Working Bee Success
About 25 parents and students attended Saturday's P&C School Working Bee. Volunteers focused on three areas; the entrance to the school off the carpark, the equipment zone and the yarning circle. The school is really looking great as a result of their efforts. A huge thank you to all of our volunteers and of course the P&C for their organisation.

Concert Band
On Monday night, the Concert Band performed beautifully at Belrose Public School. The band played three songs - Star wars, Happy and Quantum. For the finale, the three bands that performed on the night, Brookvale, Belrose and Sydney North played Dance the Night together and they sounded magnificent. Our students, as always, represented the school with pride. Well done Concert Band. A big thank you to Band Conductor Miss Raylie-Anne Baldock and our Band Teacher Miss Sophia Finemore for their support and leadership of the band on the night and throughout first term.

Year 6 are DanceSport Samba Champions!
On Tuesday evening our Year 6 students competed in the DanceSports Gala Evening at Dee Why RSL. Their dancing was magnificent and they represented the school, showing plenty of Brooky Pride. Students performed the Samba, Waltz and Jive as they competed against students from Collaroy Plateau and Beacon Hill Public Schools. Our judges were very impressed with our students' Samba skills and Brooky won the Samba category!
While our teachers were most impressed with the twinkly toes of our Year 6 students, they were even more impressed with how the Brooky kids supported each other and the students from other schools and showed how much they had grown socially and emotionally throughout the program. Well done Year 6.

Amazing Work Thomas!
A huge congratulations to Thomas Mcmanus who represented Brookvale at the state championship swimming. Thomas swam in the 10yrs 50m freestyle, junior IM, junior 50m butterfly. Thomas swam exceptionally well, making the finals for ALL HIS RACES! Thomas placed 8th in the state for Freestyle in the finals. He qualified 2nd fastest for butterfly and 10th fastest for the IM. We are awaiting the final results from his finals race which will be swam later in the afternoon.
Congratulations Thomas! We could not be more proud of you!!!

Buddy Hat Making and Reading Sessions
Our students checked in with their buddies this week. Our Year 6 and Year 3 buddies helped their Kindergarten buddies make some very creative Easter bonnets in preparation for our Easter Hat Parade. Elsewhere in the school, big buddies read to little buddies and little buddies read to big buddies. A great time was had by all.

Eid Celebrations
Students across the school made lanterns to celebrate Eid this week. In library lessons, Mrs Murphy-Haste has been teaching our students all about the meaning of the Eid celebration and why it is celebrated. Our P&C, in conjunction with the Said family, provided a little present for every child. What a lovely way to celebrate the diversity that makes us strong at Brookvale at the end of the term.

5K Night of the Notables
What a wonderful night it was for 5K on Thursday as the presented their Night of the Notables projects to fellow students, friends, family and the community. Students in 5K have been working on getting to know their 'notable' person throughout Term 1, gathering information through ongoing research to support their understanding of the significant impact their chosen person has had on society.
Students made their own stall to showcase their notable's life, including their achievements and their remarkable works. Students dressed as their notable person and many stayed in character the whole evening answering, while answering questions about 'their' life.
Students had a ball preparing and presenting on the evening. Congratulations 5K. We are so proud of you all.

Easter Hat Parade and Grandparents' Day
What a fun end to the term we had this morning at the Easter Hat Parade. It is always a pleasure to welcome our grandparents and friends into the school. We loving showing off our school to Nana and Pa. And what a turn out. Our classrooms were packed!
We were of course lucky enough to be visited by the Easter Bunny herself, who led her favourite dance, which interestingly turned out to be the 'Chicken Dance'. I know the Easter Bunny was very impressed with our students' Easter bonnets, their dancing, singing and their parading.
It was lovely to have visitors in our classrooms and a picnic morning tea with our families. A big thank you to those who supported the Year 6 cake stall or purchased a book for the library.

What's been happening in our classrooms?
Kindergarten have been busy exploring shapes this week. Students have been learning about the characteristics of two dimensional shapes and how smaller shapes can fit inside larger ones. It been a hands-on journey of discovery!
The investigations into shapes have been mirrored in Year 1 and 2 this week, with students focused on combining and separating shapes to make new shapes. Students also explored how shapes can be organised according to their characteristics such as the number of sides or vertices. In science, Stage 1 have been learning about life cycles and how living things change over time. In English, students were learning to correctly structure compound sentences as part of their focus on sentence level grammar.
This week, Stage 2 students have been hard at work perfecting the art of writing the simple sentence, using strong action verbs. Students discovered how a well chosen verb can be used to bring their writing to life.
Stage 3 have been learning to identify and analyse literary devices in texts. Students have worked on using personification to enhance their writing through vivid imagery, doing an amazing job. In mathematics, students have been learning about fractions that are greater than one by solving addition problems and representing them as mixed and improper fractions.

Worker of the Week

Our Worker of the Week is Tiger in 6L who did an amazing job at identifying evidence to support the key themes from the Year 6 English text The Wild Robot. Well done Tiger.

Join the P&C Helpers Group
Want to help the P&C and contribute to our fantastic school community spirit, but can’t commit regularly? Join our P&C Helpers WhatsApp group!
It’s for parents who are happy to lend a hand on an ad hoc basis. No pressure, no meetings – just occasional shout-outs when we need extra hands!
We’d love to have you on board!
Football Parking Volunteering
We are fortunate to be in close proximity to Brookvale Oval. During the Manly Sea Eagles home games, the P&C utilises the school car park for fundraising by charging the general public for parking spots. This stands as a significant fundraising initiative for the school and is an easily accessible volunteering opportunity.
Each parking event requires 3 to 4 parent volunteers for 1h30 hours max (the car park is usually full within 45 minutes!). Tasks include collecting entry fees and directing cars to how and where to park. All instructions will be sent by text message prior to your shift (it’s all very easy!).
It is a valuable way for all parents to help the school and meet fellow parents at the same time.
To thank you for your time, you will get a free entry (general admission) to a Manly Sea Eagles home game of your choice.
Please visit our website to sign up to your preferred date.
The next date we need volunteers for is Thursday 17 April from 6pm to 7.30pm
Uniform Shop Information
The uniform shop will be closed during the school holidays.
The uniform shop will be open in Term 2, on Wednesday 7 May, from 8.15am to 9am.
Donations to the uniform shop are also greatly appreciated. We encourage parents who have good quality uniforms their children have outgrown to drop off their items anytime at the school office or directly at the shop during opening hours.
Birthday Shout Out!
Wishing a happy birthday to all our students celebrating in April!
