BPS Newsletter 2025 Term 2 Week 5
Principal's Report
What a big week at Brooky!
Wow – what a week it’s been at Brooky! With so much happening across the school, I want to begin by congratulating our students for the incredible way they continue to uphold our core values of Respect, Responsibility, and Personal Best in everything they do. As you read through this newsletter, I’m sure you’ll see many examples of these values in action.
Weeks like this also remind me just how lucky we are to have such a dedicated and passionate team here at Brookvale. Our teachers, support staff, office staff, and SLSOs consistently go above and beyond to create rich and meaningful opportunities for our students. Amidst all the events and activities, our staff still found time to deepen their own professional learning -engaging in focused grammar workshops and participating in the second round of Quality Teaching Rounds. Their commitment to ongoing growth and excellence is inspiring.
It is my absolute pleasure, in the week's newsletter, to introduce our new Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) provider OSHClub, who will now take over from Uniting after an exacting and exhaustive tender process.
Changes to Before and After School Care Arrangements
Today a note has been sent home informing parents and carers of an upcoming change to our Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) arrangements at Brookvale Public School. After a detailed and competitive tender process conducted by the NSW Department of Education, OSHClub, part of the Junior Adventures Group, has been appointed as our new OSHC provider, commencing Tuesday 22 July 2025 (the first day of Term 3).
I believe parents will be impressed with the programs, level of care and affordable pricing point of the new provider.
Parents of students that use our OSHC service are encouraged to read carefully through the Welcome to OSHClub letter and complete the suggested actions to ensure a successful transition for their child.
Our current provider, Uniting Early Learning, also participated in the tender process and has worked closely with the Department and school to ensure a smooth handover. We extend our deepest gratitude to the entire Uniting team, who have delivered an outstanding service to our students and families. Their warmth, care and commitment to children’s wellbeing have been an invaluable part of our school community.
Uniting has expressed their full support for a smooth transition to Junior Adventures Group and will continue to work closely with OSHClub over the coming weeks. I especially wish to acknowledge Anja Kruger for her innovative leadership, professionalism and dedication as Service Leader. Uniting’s final day of operation at Brookvale will be Friday 4 July 2025 (the last day of Term 2).
The upcoming Term 2 Winter Holiday period will be used for:
- Uniting to vacate the service space;
- OSHClub to set up and prepare the environment;
- OSHClub to demonstrate compliance and readiness to the regulator for final approval.
As a result, Brookvale OSHC will not be open during these holidays.
However, OSHClub has arranged for all Brookvale students to be offered Vacation Care at the Wheeler Heights OSHClub. To access this service, families must enrol with OSHClub and make new bookings. Full details on how to enrol are included in the welcome letter from OSHClub below.
To help families prepare for the transition, OSHClub will hold two parent information evenings in the school library:
- Wednesday 11 June, 6:00pm – 6:30pm
- Tuesday 17 June, 6:00pm – 6:30pm
The school would like to thank Hina Osmany, our P&C President, for representing our parent community throughout the tender process and for her ongoing support.
I understand that changes like this can bring uncertainty. However, I am confident OSHClub will deliver high-quality care while supporting our students and families through a positive transition. Thank you for your continued trust and partnership.
Kindergarten 2026 Open Day - Thursday 5 June
Our Transition to School Program kicks off next week with our Pre-School Open Day on Thursday, 5 June and we need your help to spread the word. Children who will be starting Kindergarten in 2026, along with their parents or carers, are invited to join us for a fun-filled morning featuring performances by our talented school band, choir, and dance group. Families will also have the chance to meet our school leaders, and children can enjoy games and activities led by our dedicated teachers.
Details of the full transition program are included in the flyer below.
We warmly invite parents and children to attend the Open Day and all upcoming transition events. Parents can register for the event by scanning the QR code on the flyer.
If you know of any families in the community with children starting school next year, please help spread the word by sharing this information with them. We can’t wait to meet our future Brooky students.
Zone Cross Country
Congratulations to all the Brookvale students who competed in the Manly Zone Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday! It was wonderful to see you all supporting one another, cheering each other on and showing true Brooky Pride throughout the day. Every runner gave their best effort, striving to achieve their personal goals and we are incredibly proud of your determination and sportsmanship. A special mention goes to Riley H, who placed 2nd in the 8/9 Years Girls race, her sister Clio H, who came 2nd in the Senior Girls' race, and Zak V, who finished 6th in the Senior Boys' race. Levi also ran a fantastic race to finish 8th, and Abel showed great endurance to come 9th in his event. Riley, Clio, and Zack will now represent Brookvale at the Regional Carnival – we wish them the very best of luck!

Harold comes to Brooky
This week, Brookvale students were thrilled to welcome the Life Education Van and their beloved giraffe mascot, Healthy Harold. The interactive sessions, led by specialist educators, covered a range of topics including nutrition, personal safety, physical activity and respectful relationships. Students engaged in age-appropriate lessons designed to empower them to make safer and healthier choices. Meeting Healthy Harold was undoubtedly the highlight, bringing smiles and enthusiasm as he helped reinforce the importance of wellbeing in a fun and memorable way.

Project Penguin Zoo Visit
On Wednesday our Stage 2 students took part in the Project Penguin Zoo Visit Day, an engaging experience that deepened their understanding of the Little Penguins native to our local area. During the visit, students participated in a Penguin Q&A session with a panel of penguin wardens, zookeepers, and environmental officers, learning about the habits of Little Penguins, the types of injuries that bring them to the zoo and the rehabilitation process. The day also included a visit to the underwater viewing area, where students observed penguins swimming and interacting in their habitat and a talk from a zoo keeper, providing further insights into penguin care and conservation. This hands-on learning experience was both educational and inspiring, highlighting the importance of protecting our local wildlife

Debating team makes it debut
Our senior debating team, the Brookie G.O.A.Ts, took on local rivals Narraweena Public School on Thursday in their very first debate as part of the Premier's Debating Challenge. The team, made up of Isla H, Clio H, Sage R, and Taj SG, demonstrated outstanding teamwork, preparation, and confidence throughout the event. The topic for the debate was “That we should make the school day longer”, with Brookvale arguing the affirmative.
The students presented well-reasoned arguments and strong rebuttals, clearly communicating their position and engaging thoughtfully with the opposing team. It was an exciting and closely contested debate and while Narraweena was awarded a narrow victory, our team should be incredibly proud of their performance. They represented Brookvale with pride and walked away with valuable experience and insights to build on for future rounds. Way to go, Brooky G.O.A.Ts!

Stage 2 Multicultural Public Speaking Competition
The Stage 2 final of the Multicultural Public Speaking competition was a fantastic showcase of confidence, clarity, and cultural insight. Our finalists Sylvie T and Maxine W from 3H, Emilija J and Sophia O from 3/4P, and Nike B and Adelita V from 4D delivered thoughtful and engaging speeches that impressed both their peers and teachers alike. Each student spoke with passion and poise, making it a very tough job for our judges! Congratulations to all the finalists on their outstanding efforts. Choosing two finalists for the regional finals was an exceptionally difficult task and it really went down to the wire. Congratulations to Sophia and Emilija who have been selected to represent Brookvale at the Stage 2 regional finals which will take place on Thursday 19th June 2025 at Brookvale Public School. All students are commended for their outstanding public speaking skills.

Whole School Reconciliation Week and Recognition Assembly
Our school community came together this week for a special Reconciliation Week Assembly, honouring the 2025 theme, Bridging Now to Next. This theme reflects the ongoing connection between past, present, and future and calls on all Australians to step forward together, guided by the lessons of history. We extend our thanks to Van J in 5/6G for delivering a moving Acknowledgement of Country, setting a respectful and reflective tone for the event. Congratulations to our Silver Award and cross country ribbon recipients.

Junior Choir has started
Our Junior Choir has started up again, and it’s been wonderful to hear their joyful voices filling the school. The students are already learning new songs with enthusiasm and energy. Junior Choir takes place at lunchtimes in KF on Wednesdays and anyone is welcome to join.

Poetry Around the Campfire Night
Another quick reminder that we have postponed the Poetry Around the Campfire Night to Thursday 19 June. If you haven't been to this quintessentially Brooky event, don't miss it. It is one of the most inspiring nights on the Brooky calendar. Pop it in your calendars and come along. Let us know that you are coming by signing up using this link.
What's been happening in our classrooms?
It’s been another exciting week of learning across all stages at Brookvale!
Our Kindergarten students have been working hard on their writing, using their 6 Star Writing Rubric to create simple sentences. They’ve shown impressive focus in checking their work against the criteria and are becoming confident, independent writers.
Stage 1 students have been exploring the concept of measurement using repeated units. Through hands-on investigations, they’ve measured everyday objects and discovered which units are best suited to different tasks. They've also been identifying relationships between units - such as realising that seven three-centimetre blocks are equal in length to three seven-centimetre blocks.
Stage 2 students have had a dynamic week across literacy and numeracy. In reading groups, each team was assigned a different poem from Bindi by Kirli Saunders, with time to practise and perform their pieces for the class. Students have also been learning how to make their writing more descriptive by expanding noun groups using words like who, that, and with. For example, turning “The mysterious black cat devoured her food” into “The mysterious black cat, who had pointed ears, devoured her food.” These small yet powerful changes are helping them add depth and detail to their writing. In Mathematics, students have been exploring how the numbers on a clock form a circular number line, which has boosted their confidence and accuracy in reading analog time.
5K have continued their fantastic work on the Game Changers Challenge. This week, they’ve been gathering research to support their projects on topics such as deforestation, food waste, and plastic usage. Students are designing surveys for the school community, exploring expert perspectives, and analysing their findings to brainstorm sustainable solutions. Their final submissions will include a web portfolio and a prototype invention designed to make a positive impact on the community.
Stage 3 students have had an active and creative week! In sport, they’ve been practising relay races and refining their shot put technique. In English, they’ve been experimenting with adverbials and learning how to position them for maximum impact within a sentence. Meanwhile, excitement is building as auditions were held for their upcoming musical A Wonka Remix – a reimagining of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We can’t wait to see the magic they bring to the stage!

Worker of the Week

A big congratulations to Charlotte, our well-deserving Worker of the Week from 1B! Charlotte has been working super duper hard during writing, especially in developing her understanding of prepositions. During a task where students were asked to write a simple sentence using one preposition about the fox in Rosie’s Walk, Charlotte went above and beyond by crafting a fantastic sentence that included not one, but four prepositions! What an impressive effort – well done, Charlotte! We’re so proud of your creativity and dedication.
